Ethereum Cat Gio

He has been sitting on ethereum.org for years. Almost nobody knows his name.

Gio is a real cat, drawn onto a 2018 charity greeting card — and hidden inside the diamond on ethereum.org ever since. Minting is paused while the card moves to a new contract with a flywheel model.

THE STORY, IN THREE ACTS

2018

The card

RadiCards launches 32 NFT greeting cards for charity. Card 6, “Catz on ETH”, features a real cat named Gio — a pet of one of the builders.

2020

The easter egg

A commit quietly places Gio inside the diamond on ethereum.org’s decentralized identity page. He is still there today.

Now

Moving on

The 2018 contract was never taken down and never upgraded — but it sends every wei to fixed addresses nobody here controls. Minting is paused while Gio moves to a new contract.

The Ethereum diamond on ethereum.org, filled with a mirrored image of the same cat

Look closely at the diamond. Same cat. Same glowing Ethereum eyes.

This is the original — not a tribute and not a re-draw. The same cat, the same 2018 card, the same artwork that ended up on Ethereum's own website.

Minting paused

Moving to a new contract

The 2018 contract hard-codes where the money goes — two fixed addresses this project does not control and cannot change. One of them has not moved a single wei since December 2018.

Minting is paused while Gio moves to a new contract with a flywheel model, so the proceeds go somewhere the community can actually see and steer.

Nothing you do here spends anything, and the cards already minted are unaffected.

This page is maintained by holders of $GIO — an ERC-20 named after the cat. Trading fees fund the mints, and will fund the new contract's flywheel.
